Junuzovic warns Werder Bremen: “Don’t overdo it”

Zlatko Junuzovic warned his ex-club Werder Bremen against too much euphoria. The furious climber from the Hanseatic city, who still gives the Austrian goosebumps years after his departure, must concentrate first and foremost on staying up in the league.

Werder Bremen have drawn attention to themselves in the Bundesliga so far with numerous point gains in the last few minutes and are in ninth place with 21 points after 15 games within reach of the European Cup places. But the former captain and longtime SVW professional Zlatko Junuzovic has now slowed down the euphoria that prevails in the environment of the Bundesliga promoted a little.

Asked by “Bild” if he could have imagined that his former Bremen team would do so well, the Austrian said: “I thought there was a functioning team and they could keep up. But that they perform like that, I really didn’t expect it.”

His ex and heart club is doing “a great job,” said Junuzovic, who says he tries to watch every Weser club game. “It’s fun,” said the midfielder, who hung up his football boots in his home country in the summer, in praise of those responsible for coach Ole Werner.

However, the 35-year-old also warned Werder fans against dreaming given the four-point gap to Europe. “You shouldn’t exaggerate. It’s not good for the club,” he emphasized, adding: “It’s going in the right direction, but I think it’s too early. Then it goes back and forth.” For Junuzovic it is clear: “The top priority must continue to be the league.”

Junuzovic: “Goosebumps” in the Werder Bremen stadium

Junuzovic himself was last at the Weser Stadium for Claudio Pizarro’s farewell game at the end of September this year. A return full of emotions and joy. “The city will always remain in my heart. I spent fantastic years there,” he said, adding: “It was really cool to be back in the city and with Werder. It felt like a class reunion.”

When he entered the stadium, he had “goosebumps” and “again the feeling from before in me. Even before that, in the dressing room, a lot of memories came up. I tried to absorb everything,” said the 35-year-old between 2012 and 2018 was under contract with the Green-Whites before ending his career at RB Salzburg.
