It has been thirteen years ago that 35-year-old José van de Vliet from Waalre was killed in India. Her friend Remco S. is the main suspect. After all these years, the family of José still does not know what happened to their beloved daughter and sister and where Remco S. has gone. In the documentary Toxic of Omroep Brabant they finally get the answers they were looking for all those years.
Because how did José be killed, what exactly happened on the day of her death and where did S. go? These questions mother Mien and brother Albert have been driving to despair for years.
After the great loss, Mien got a cerebral infarction and for Albert life no longer had to be. José’s father literally killed himself after the loss of his daughter. The family has been destroyed, because how do you continue if your loved one is horribly murdered and you don’t get any answers from anyone?
Heart of gold
Documentary makers Nicole Theuns and Ricardo Paz Belvis dive into the life of José in TOXIC. Family and friends describe her in the series as a sweet, gentle girl with a heart of gold. She worked hard, during the day at a health insurer and in the evenings she had a security company with her father and brother. Already at the age of 23 she could buy her own house, a corner house next to her parents. She loved traveling, together with her brother Albert and she also regularly went to Asia with her mother.

India in particular stole her heart. There she saw so much poverty that she wanted to do something about it. José started his own foundation: Stichting Care for People. Before that she collected things such as wheelchairs, prostheses and glasses, so that she could help the people there. She brought them to India herself, she dreamed of her own house in the Indian village of Mahabalipuram and saved hard for it.
Self -assured José becomes timid woman
José’s life changed completely when she gets a relationship with the 32-year-old Remco S. from Limburg. He soon moved in with her. He did not have his own house, no work and was mainly on the couch at her home. He purchased all kinds of things to her name, who ended up in the garden at José. The family saw how her well -maintained home turned into a garbage dump.
But José also changed. She became quieter, timid and more and more in the background. S. was on top of it like a hawk, never left her alone and called her continuously when she was outside. He determined what she was allowed and not allowed to do and isolated her from family and friends. The self -assured José turned into a submissive, timid woman. The family could not penetrate her and felt powerless.

Brought home in closed box
When José managed to get a house in India, the couple went that way more often. This is also the case on 10 March 2012. Two weeks later, the family received the destructive message that José had died in India. Later it turned out that she was killed.
The woman was killed by violence. She turned out to have died two days before her body was found. S. was soon seen as the main suspect. He claimed that they were robbed together and that he was beaten unconscious. The moment he recovered, the morning after the robbery was his lecture, he only discovered that his girlfriend had died.
S. was arrested, but was released after ninety days on bail. Since then, every trail is missing. José came to the Netherlands two weeks after her death. Relatives were no longer allowed to see her.
In the years that follow, the family does not receive any information about the case. In the Documentary Toxic you look in the search for answers for which the documentary makers talk to relatives and travel to India for the answer to the question: Where is Remco S.?
