Jorge Rey: “I still think I’m going to wake up from this dream”

George King He is accelerated, he had a busy 2021 and his summer 2022 agenda does not fit a pin. It is that with only 22 years, the very young designer already has a career that many colleagues would envy: he made his first parade at 18 years old and more than 500 people attended; he dressed Natalia Oreiro, Pampita, Juana Viale, Lali Esposito, among many others; he designed one of the dresses that he wore Stefi Roitmann at his wedding with Ricky Montaner; led red carpets and continues to dream of more.

In his atelier in Recoleta, the boy from Rufino, Santa Fe, drinks mate and talks about the importance of professionalism and responsibility and how he managed to build a confident personality after being bullied as a teenager.

News: What is one thing you still can’t believe about your meteoric career?

George King: Everything! Think that I come from a city of 18,000 inhabitants and everything is like a flash. I carry it with a lot of professionalism and responsibility. I do many things for my brand, I am always impeccable, I take care of the image of the people I see, of my image, of my friends. I also have other commitments, I try to do everything and fulfill everything I assume. Many things happen simultaneously. I look back and see what I did. I do not rejoice in that. I’m not very ego. In life there are things that fill me much more than dressing someone or not.

News: What do you remember about your arrival in Buenos Aires and your first parade?

King: The looks of the people, what they said, what they didn’t, how the dresses looked at me, how they couldn’t believe it, I remember those days before my first fashion show, the anxiety, not being able to sleep. I remember how I used to get stressed out over one show, and now I have a million things to figure out! There is no time to think about what is happening. I live a lot in the future, with fashion you have to be looking forward all the time, thinking about what people are going to consume. It is a race against constant time.

News: At what point do you stop between all that maelstrom and start creating?

King: I make time for myself, to cultivate art, to write, to think. I take two hours every afternoon in the atelier. I put together phrases, scenarios. Creativity goes far beyond just making dresses. I like to dance, for now I leave it for my privacy. I put together a universe between four walls.

News: Did you ever doubt that you were going to be able to make your dream come true?

King: Yes of course. What I have harvested in the last time is self-confidence. But at that obvious moment I doubted it and I had no idea how to get to where I am today, I still have no idea how I did it (laughs). Working and with love. And with the right people. Every time I remember how I went with my little bag to learn to sew and I say: How incredible! I think at some point I’m going to wake up from this dream.

News: How do you get along with fame?

King: I do mine I don’t like the masking. People who know me know how I am, I am simply King, just as you see me. The other time I went to San Nicolás and people asked me for photos and it was crazy, I have fun, I love meeting people, human connection is important to me, asking the names of those who approach me. I love the people who follow me, I try to reply to everyone.

News: He said that in his adolescence he suffered a lot of bullying, what was left of that?

King: Everything that happens is because it has to happen, be it good or bad, sometimes you don’t understand it, but although it seems like a trivial consolation, I think it shapes your personality and character. I do a lot of therapy. Clearly I would have preferred it not to happen to me, it was horrible, this laughing at someone is nonsense. At a certain point I dedicate myself to beautifying people because I want to give them security, when you feel safe everything flows better. When they bully you they generate a lot of insecurity. Today I continue to work on it, all those things that they told you are ingrained in your mind. But now I have a different mindset.

News: What do you keep about Rufino’s boy?

King: Everything! I love mate, roasts. Naps don’t, they make me anxious, I feel like I’m wasting time, maybe I only take a nap on a Saturday. In Buenos Aires I tried to make my routine. I feel the same. I get there and I have a lot of fun, I like to watch the sunsets, get together with my friends. I am happy with very little.

News: How is your circle of trust in Buenos Aires made up?

King: I am in a relationship, I have many friends, we are like a community. We love to produce ourselves, we are “new romantics”. We share the same concept of freedom, living, enjoying, being.

News: How do you bring this feeling of freedom to your fashion?

King: I can create a dress with anything, I never limit myself, I try everything. I think about how I can make the impossible possible.

News: How is the Argentine woman when it comes to dressing?

King: It depends on the profile of the woman, we cannot generalize on that. The women, each one, is in her personal search. There are trends, but after all, fashion passes, but style is the only thing that will last. You have to be faithful to the style of each one.

News: What is the summer trend?

King: The summer trend is a lot of volume and vibrant colors. Less shine, but a lot of color. The woman after the pandemic wants to feel comfortable at an event, enjoy herself, dance the night away.

News: What are your next dreams to fulfill?

King: I have a lot, there are no limits when it comes to dreaming. You have to want to work for your dreams, insist, fail and try again, success is the sum of failures, you have to find a way around it. I would love to do a Netflix series, I have an artistic side that I pour into my dresses but I could pour into any other discipline.

News: How is the atmosphere among designers?

King: The other day I was saying to a friend at an event: “I hope that when I grow up I won’t be like them”, not for everyone, I say it for some. I hope I don’t have the attitude of many designers when I grow up. I don’t have problems with anyone, I don’t know if someone will have them with me, I focus a lot on mine and not bothering the other.
