Jamaican bobsleigh novelty at Olympics

The association promises “Fire on Ice”: For the first time ever, Jamaica will be represented in three Olympic bobsleigh competitions at the Beijing Games (January 4 to 20).

“We start in the four, the two and the women’s monobob,” announced the “Team Jamaica” on Monday on its official Twitter account.

For the first time since Calgary 1988, Jamaica are back at the Olympics with a foursome. At the time, the team led by pilot Dudley Stokes inspired Hollywood director Jon Turteltaub to create his multi-award-winning Disney film “Cool Runnings”.

The association of the Caribbean island state is meanwhile struggling with massive financial problems. In order to provide its athletes with the best possible equipment, since November 2021 a crowdfunding campaign under the motto “Cool sleds for the hottest thing on the ice” has only raised $4,000 instead of the targeted $194,000. “Our athletes work hard and with great dedication, but they can never reach their potential without top sleds,” says the association’s website.
