Italy wants to ban all fur farms and close all mink farms

The budget committee of the Italian Senate voted on Tuesday for an amended amendment to the budget bill, which provides for the closure of the country’s ten remaining mink farms within six months and a permanent ban on fur farming across Italy. The international animal welfare association (HSI) called this development a “historic victory”.

Specifically, the addition means an immediate ban on fur farming, including mink, fox, marten and chinchilla, and the closure of all active fur farms in Italy by June 30, 2022 Million euros received in 2022.

Vote is “historic victory” for animal welfare in Italy

The vote follows discussions with the international and European animal welfare association, which in its latest report presented practical and strategic solutions for the closure and conversion of fur farms into alternative, humane and sustainable companies.

“This is a historic victory for animal welfare in Italy and HSI / Europe is very proud that our fur farm conversion strategy has played a central role in eliminating this cruel and dangerous industry in our country. There are very clear reasons for closing and banning fur farms: economic, ecological, health and of course animal welfare, “said HSI Italy Director Martina Pluda in a press release. “Today’s vote recognizes that allowing the mass breeding of wild animals for frivolous fur fashion poses a risk to animals and humans that is not justified by the limited economic benefits to a small minority of people engaged in this cruel industry can. With so many designers, retailers and consumers abandoning fur, the fur farm conversion offers people a sustainable future that the fur trade simply cannot offer, ”added Pluda.

Although the decision still requires final parliamentary approval, it is expected that it will get through and Italy will become the 16th European country to ban fur farming. Many Italian luxury companies such as Valentino, Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace are already doing without fur.
