Iceland pays dearly against Croatia after the EM coup

The coup was followed by a setback: just two days after the big win against France, Iceland’s national handball team suffered a setback at the European Championships.

There was a late 22:24 (12:10) defeat against Croatia in Budapest, the race for participation in the semi-finals in group 1 remains open. Denmark (6 points) leads, followed by the French and Icelanders (4 each) with equal points.

Only the top two teams in the group of six advance to the semi-finals. In the evening, Denmark will face the Netherlands in their fourth group game (18:00), France will meet Montenegro (20:30 / Eurosport). Croatia, started as one of the favourites, got their first two points in the main round.

Iceland caused a stir last Saturday with its impressive victory over Olympic champions and record world champions France (29:21).

Against Croatia, SC Magdeburg’s Omar Ingi Magnusson was one of the top scorers with five goals, while Ivan Martinovic of TSV Hannover-Burgdorf scored the same.
