Hundreds of extra temporary houses built in Eindhoven

The municipality of Eindhoven wants to build another 500 to 2000 extra temporary houses in the coming period. With this she hopes to put a stop to the housing shortage in the city in the short term. The moveable homes should be ready by the end of next year.

There is a major shortage of affordable owner-occupied and rental homes in Eindhoven: the counter now stands at more than 10,000. In the Housing Deal, an agreement with the government to build more houses, it has been agreed that a total of at least 15,000 additional houses will be built in the City of Light over the next five years. “We already know that we will not achieve that, but we are trying to make a quick move with the temporary houses,” says alderman Yasin Torunoglu.

At least 500 new houses in the west of Eindhoven
The municipality has had it investigated where these temporary houses, all for rent, can be placed. Fourteen locations emerged from a so-called quick scan. The alderman does not want to fully reveal what those are yet, because talks with local residents and other interested parties still have to be held.

In any case, it concerns an extension of the project at the Berenkuil with eighty student residences. There are now three hundred. In addition, the alderman has his eye on the new location between Hotel Campanile and the A2. “That is actually a business location, but it will certainly remain empty in the coming years. There is room for at least five hundred homes here.”

Build much faster
Which other locations the municipality has in mind will be announced later. In Eindhoven you have to be registered for an average of ten years and then actively search for another year to get a social rental home.

According to the alderman, the entire process from applying for a permit to building a permanent house normally takes seven years on average. This can be shortened considerably with the temporary houses.

First temporary houses already delivered
Earlier, the municipality already allowed 700 temporary houses to be built in the hamlet of Ter Veld. These movable homes in the north of the city may remain there for a maximum of thirty years. It will be decided later on how long the new temporary batch may remain in place.

Before the end of next year, the minimum of five hundred extra movable houses must be built throughout the city. That number could rise to 2,000.

Linde was one of the first to receive the key to her temporary home.
