HSV loan striker
The liaison between Mikkel Kaufmann and Hamburger SV may be coming to an end in the near future. The Danish centre-forward, who is on loan from FC Copenhagen with an option to buy, spoke up after being temporarily suspended due to multiple delays – and also reacted with incomprehension to coach Tim Walter’s action. “It’s the club that decides and they think I should get a penalty and I understand that. But I still think it’s an overreaction,” Kaufmann told Danish sports magazine “Tipsbladet”.
The 21-year-old attacker, who has never played more than the role of joker at HSV and was only on the pitch for 162 minutes, specified: “I think it’s an overreaction to call it suspended. (…) In the last two weeks I have been late twice. The first time it was 30 minutes, the second time 15 minutes. The first time it was about a Covid 19 test, the second time about the meeting before a training session. Of course that’s not good enough and I know it.”

Kaufmann hopes to get another chance this season. “I have heard nothing but that I am suspended until the weekend. So we’ll have to look at things when we start training again next week.” For the offensive man there is a difference “between a suspension and not being considered in the squad”.

Under-21 international Kaufmann is expected to return to his home club Copenhagen in the summer. “We have clear rules in the team,” HSV coach Walter said on Thursday. “If you’re not punctual several times, it’s possible that you won’t be there at the weekend.” For Kaufmann, that applies “definitely” with a view to the away game at Fortuna Düsseldorf (Sat., 1:30 p.m.).
