Hamburger SV has a new head coach. One week after Tim Walter left, Steffen Baumgart took over.
Now it’s official: Steffen Baumgart is the new head coach of Hamburger SV. The traditional second division club announced this on Tuesday. The ambitious newcomer made it clear what his plan was: “It starts immediately, I will work directly with the boys. The goal is clear, we don’t have to talk around it: promotion.”
Baumgart is the successor to Tim Walter, who had to leave last week after a 3-4 defeat against Hannover 96. Interim coach Merlin Polzin was in charge of the 2-2 draw against Hansa Rostock at the weekend. He will be available to Baumgart as an assistant. The same applies to goalkeeper coaches Sven Höh and Loïc Favé.
HSV board member Jonas Boldt: “Steffen Baumgart is known for his emotionally stirring manner. It is important to maintain the fire that we have ignited and to continue on our path in a targeted manner.”
For Baumgart, the position is special for another reason. The 52-year-old is an avowed HSV fan.
The first game is on Sunday
The Rostock native worked at 1. FC Köln until mid-December, but had to leave after a crash in the basement region of the 1. Bundesliga. He previously worked at SC Paderborn and led East Westphalia into the Bundesliga. Now he should do the same with HSV. The “Rothosen” are currently in third place in the 2nd Bundesliga, one point ahead of Hannover 96 in fourth place.
Baumgart is scheduled to lead the first training session at the Volksparkstadion on Tuesday afternoon. The new HSV coach’s first opponent is SV Elversberg, who will be guests on Sunday (from 1:30 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).
