Rise “clear goal”
After failing to get promoted to the Bundesliga for the fourth year in a row, Hamburger SV wants to see CEO Dr. Thomas Wüstefeld will start the 2022/23 season with a clear mission. The North Germans had surprisingly made it to the relegation place after a final sprint, but failed in the knockout duels against Hertha BSC, who saved themselves after a defeat in the first leg in the relegation. The next attempt is apparently to be made in an unchanged composition – with sports director Jonas Boldt and head coach Tim Walter.
“If I am asked by the supervisory board, I will say that we should start the new season in this constellation,” said Wüstefeld on Tuesday (quoted via “foosball”). The control panel, which is expected to meet on Thursday, had announced a comprehensive seasonal analysis. In particular, the future of Boldt, who has a contract until 2023, was recently not considered certain. “We should formulate the goal of moving up. With Schalke and Werder, two top-class players are gone. We know that the league is upgrading, that Hanover, for example, is stepping on the gas,” said HSV boss Wüstefeld, who also mentioned Fortuna Düsseldorf. Nevertheless: “We are favorites and should send clear signals.”

Report: Vagnoman and David want to leave HSV
Most recently, the Hamburgers had been able to unite their own fans behind them again with two sold-out home games. Wüstefeld sees the fact that something similar succeeds in the fifth year of the second division as a major challenge. “That’s why I think it’s very important for the environment that we set a clear goal.” As a candidate for sale, the name of home-grown child Josha Vagnoman (21) keeps coming up. The “picture“ even reported on Tuesday that the U21 national player had informed the club of his desire to change and was in talks with several Bundesliga clubs. The transfer fee is up to 8 million euros. Central defender Jonas David (22), who has only been a substitute since November, also wants to leave.
In principle, however, no serious changes are planned, says Würstefeld: “The clear goal is that we remain steadfast. We want to keep the team together and strengthen it going forward.”

Sports director Boldt himself announced after the disappointment on Monday evening that he wanted to work eagerly on the future of HSV – provided the supervisory board would let him. “I have a drawer full of ideas. Everything that concerns the future is not finally in my hands. A major analysis has been announced. I have my thoughts that should flow in. But we shouldn’t let a lot of time pass by,” explained the 40-year-old (quoted via “Picture”). “I’ve been here for three years. Everyone sees how I burn for these colors. How I identify with the club and the city. As long as I have the chance, I will keep moving forward.”
Plus with the professional budget: HSV is gearing up for the next attempt at promotion
According to reports, the budget for the professionals is to be increased from 22 to 24 million euros. Since the Bundesliga relegation in 2018, five coaches have tried to return to the German upper house. With Walter, who was celebrated by the fans despite the relegation defeat, the first trainer could go into a second year in the second division at HSV.
