Hamburger SV has been conspicuously reticent on the winter transfer market in recent weeks. The HSV bosses have now explained why, apart from loan player Giorgi Chakvetadze, no other player was brought in for the promotion race in the 2nd Bundesliga.
All rumors of the last few days and weeks came to nothing. Except for the loan deal with midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze, HSV remained completely inactive on the player market in January.
Neither Leeds talent Crysencio Summerville, nor Hoffenheim striker Sargis Adamyan or PSG jewel Djeidi Gassama were brought to Hamburg, transfers fell apart until the deadline day last Monday for various reasons.
“We only wanted to do things out of absolute conviction,” HSV sports director Michael Mutzel is quoted as saying in the “kicker”. Together with sports director Jonas Boldt, Mutzel led the talks with and about potential reinforcements for the rest of the second half of the season. Ultimately, a further commitment did not come about, mainly for financial reasons.
The Rothosen prefer the sporting risk of not having the adequate width in the squad in the event of renewed failures in the tough everyday life of the second division to a renewed financial risk of taking a lot of money for players who want to climb back into the Bundesliga Bundesliga cannot guarantee either.
A reluctance in the Hanseatic city that the club bosses have imposed on themselves. Michael Mutzel formulated it benevolently from HSV’s point of view: “We have confidence in our squad and a homogeneous, functioning group.”
HSV is facing a duel with leaders Darmstadt 98
From now on, the management team at Hamburger SV should keep their fingers crossed that after the absences of Tim Leibold, Josha Vagnoman, Jan Gyamerah and Co., no other HSV player is injured.
The squad of head coach Tim Walter is particularly thin on the offensive flanks, where with Bakery Jatta and Faride Alidou there are actually only two trained wingers available.
With this team sewn on edge – no other team in the 2nd Bundesliga has fewer players in the licensed squad (25) – the return to the German football upper house should now be made clear. Before the away game at leaders SV Darmstadt 98 on Sunday (from 1:30 p.m.), HSV is three points behind the first direct promotion spot currently occupied by city rivals FC St. Pauli.
