HSV: Boldt denies conversation with Breitenreiter, no commitment to Walter

After 2-0 in Nuremberg

Shortly before the last game of the year there is coaching speculation at Hamburger SV. According to “Sky”, the second division team has held discussions with coaches Friedhelm Funkel and Andre Breitenreiter. “With the latter, more are to follow,” reported the pay-TV broadcaster. The Hamburg team should also look into other coaching candidates. HSV coach Tim Walter has recently come under increasing criticism.

Update December 16th, 6 p.m.: After the happy 2-0 win at 1. FC Nürnberg on Saturday, HSV sports director Jonas Boldt avoided making a commitment to coach Walter, but denied contact with the potential successors who had been traded. “I won’t allow myself to be carried away with any platitudes, but we will carry on with our work as normal as we do. This includes a more in-depth analysis,” he said about the coaching question (quoted via “Hamburger Morgenpost“). “I didn’t open the discussion and I don’t see any reason to kill it one way or the other. I’ll probably meet Friedhelm Funkel again on Monday at my men’s council. I last met André Breitenreiter before my time in Hamburg.”

Hamburg lost 2-1 to SC Paderborn a week ago, their first home defeat of the season, and had also previously lost on penalties to Hertha BSC in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. HSV is currently only in fourth place in the table. The “Rothosen” are four points behind the first two places.

Before the game in Nuremberg, Walter had put aside discussions about himself: “Given our standards, that’s absolutely fine. It’s not about me, it’s purely about HSV. (…) I’ve been there for two and a half years now and know what storm means in Hamburg.” The 48-year-old has an average of 1.82 points from 98 games, which is the best value for a HSV coach in the 2nd Bundesliga (to overview).
