On New Year’s Eve, troublemakers set off firecrackers in various places in Flanders. This caused an exploded bus shelter in Ghent and a small conflagration in Essen. Movies show a huge fire cloud and loud bang, but is it really dangerous? Several fire brigades in Flanders warn that it is. “The combination with hazardous substances causes a gigantic explosion, which can have enormous consequences,” says Marie De Clercq of Fire Brigade Zone Antwerp.
