Hamburger SV remains on the heels of its local rivals FC St. Pauli in the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga.
HSV beat 1. FC Magdeburg 2-0 (1-0) in the evening game on Saturday and moved up to second place in the table behind the leaders from their own city. St. Pauli scored 2-0 (2-0) at SV Elversberg on Friday.
Laszlo Benes scored the early opening goal in the ninth minute. Bakery Jatta (72nd) increased the score for the hosts, who are unbeaten in five games after a slump in September. Magdeburg lost Daniel Elfadli in the final phase with a red card after a serious foul (78th) and has now been winless for seven games – just one point away from the relegation place.
Before Hamburg made it 1-0, Cristiano Piccini first scratched the ball off the line after a shot from HSV striker Robert Glatzel, then Benes dusted it off.
After going behind, the guests kept the game open and had chances to equalize. Jatta made the decision with a header from a cross from substitute Jean-Luc Dompe.
