Hansi Flick is optimistic about his career after his coaching colleague Xabi Alonso left Real Madrid.
The German coach, whose team indirectly sealed Alonso’s exit with a 3-2 win in the Spanish Super Cup, predicts a “big future” and a “big project” for the former Leverkusen master coach.
“That’s football, it’s not my thing,” Flick explained on Wednesday about the separation between Real and Alonso. The dismissal was announced by “mutual agreement” just a day after the defeat to Barcelona.
“I have a very good relationship with Xabi. I met him in Leverkusen when I was national coach and have always stayed in touch,” said the 61-year-old.
Flick sees a promising future for Alonso, who won the first German championship in the club’s history with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 and moved to Real in the summer of 2025: “I wish him only the best and I think he will find something new, a big project.”
At Real Madrid, Álvaro Arbeloa, previously coach of the second team, took over as successor. After the separation, there is speculation about the 44-year-old Alonso’s possible involvement with Liverpool FC, for whom he was already active as a professional for a long time.
