Fully fit and in the form of his season finale, Kittel could be the type of midfielder you’ve been missing on the leash for a while. “He’s gone for the time being and is on vacation. When he comes back, we’ll talk,” Leitl announced in the “Picture‘ newspaper and added: ‘Sonny is of course an outstanding kicker. We won’t be the only ones trying to find a player like that.” Coach and player know each other from the days they spent together in Ingolstadt and have had a close relationship ever since.

“I am in constant contact with Sonny because we have known each other well and for a long time. I know in which direction he is tending,” says the former Fürth coach about the native of Gießen, who was already associated with transfers to the USA and Saudi Arabia last year. Leitl was particularly impressed by Kittel’s style of play over the past few months.

“These are issues that you work on in advance. But that’s nothing new. If such a player is on the market, then of course you inquire. And I can ask him because there is personal contact. I like him very much, also how he played. His statistics over the last few years are good,” said the 45-year-old. When asked about the personnel, sports director Marcus Mann pointed out that you have to have a package that fits all sides.

Hannover 96: TM users doubt the possibility of a Kittel transfer

Kittel moved from Ingolstadt to the Elbe on a free transfer in 2019 and after four years can look back on an impressive record of 76 goals in 140 competitive games for the “Rothosen”. In the season finale in particular, he had put in a strong performance for HSV, contributing five goals and two assists in the last nine games alone. His opening goal in the relegation second leg against VfB Stuttgart had briefly spread hope for a turnaround in the promotion battle, which ultimately failed to materialize.

A possible change from Kittel to Hannover 96 has also been a topic in the TM rumor mill since last week. However, many users have recently doubted that the Lower Saxony can or want to afford a transfer of this magnitude, albeit free of charge. “I can not imagine with the best will. A few days ago it was reported that Kittel wants to go abroad. Don’t think that H96 is very interested in the financial package either,” wrote the user “MW-Analyst”, but at the same time attested that Kittel would make sense for 96 in terms of sport.

“Schmiddi1887” is also skeptical: “He said a few days ago that he wanted financial security and security for himself and his family. The United States and Saudi Arabia are his favorite destinations. In addition, a change within the 2nd division should be considered unlikely.

User “walker008” writes: “Due to the proximity to Hanover, I see this as realistic. Basically, Kittel can help every team in the second division. The problem is that he’s a classic fair-weather footballer. When the team plays badly, he’s one of the first to let himself be dragged down. He’s been in extremely good form lately, before that it was a bit below average. Bottom line, I hope this deal goes through. For me it is also a much better option than Kruse, for example.”

Meanwhile, six departures have already been confirmed at Hannover 96 for the coming season, and another one is likely to be officially added shortly: According to TM information, the second division team has canceled center forward Simon Stehle’s contract, which originally ran until 2024. The attacker, who was last loaned out to third division club Viktoria Köln (28 games, 4 goals, 3 assists), can leave the Reds free of charge in the summer.
