Status: 07/03/2023 7:12 p.m

Handball goalkeeper David Späth led the German U21 national team to the World Cup title. Now he dreams of repeating the coup at the home European Championship.

SWR Sport: Huge success yesterday at the U21 World Cup in handball. In Berlin, Germany defeated Hungary 30:23 in the final and was crowned world champion. And goalkeeper David Späth from the Mannheim Rhein-Neckar-Löwen also did really well. He was able to save almost half of all throws on his goal. David, they’re sitting on the train, where are you going?

David Spaeth: Home. We celebrated a bit yesterday, got up in the morning, had breakfast together, and now everyone is heading home.

ohh And I can hear from her voice, it got a little later yesterday. How did you celebrate?

late: It was indeed a bit later. We went to a bar and ended the evening together. It was definitely very funny. It was a nice ending.

You are blessed. That was also a hammer game. How does the day after feel like? Yesterday you said you still can’t really understand it. How are you now?

late: It still hasn’t been fully processed. When you say that you are now world champion, it is still hard to believe. It’s just pure relief and pure joy. There was a bit of pressure there too. You really wanted it. And now that you’ve reached your goal, it’s a great feeling and a great achievement.

Who took the trophy?

late: Good question. He got around well. In the end I don’t even know. I know he was still around the bar somewhere. But I think one of the coaches took it with him.

Then I’ll keep my fingers crossed that he’s not still there.

late: I do not think so.

How does it feel for her? You are now seen as the new “miracle goalkeeper”. How proud does this sensational achievement make you?

late: Of course that makes me very proud. I’m also happy when I read the stuff – when I get so much praise and all the congratulations. Of course that makes me proud. But above all, it drives me to work more on myself so that things can continue to go uphill.

How much does she excite the senior national team? With a view to the European Championships next year in Germany, it would of course be wonderful if we could repeat a result like this. What do you mean; Would you like?

late: Naturally. It’s everyone’s dream, to play in the senior national team and then play a tournament like that in your own country. It’s an unbelievable dream. But I haven’t really looked into it yet. My goal was to play a successful World Cup. I succeeded. And now it’s time to keep working hard, do well in preparation and then have a good season. Then we’ll see.
