Status: 08/24/2023 9:32 p.m

Thanks to a strong performance by Johannes Golla, SG Flensburg-Handewitt has successfully started the new season in the Handball Bundesliga. TSV Hannover-Burgdorf was also successful.

The SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated a clear victory on the first day of the Handball Bundesliga. In front of 6,143 spectators in the campus hall, the title co-favourite defeated the northern rival HSV Hamburg 37:32 (16:14) on Thursday (08/24/2023). The best thrower was Flensburg circle player Johannes Golla with ten goals, Casper Mortensen was the best HSV thrower with seven goals.

Flensburg consistently in the lead

Both teams pushed the pace from the start, but made a few mistakes. After a goal by Swedish playmaker Jim Gottfridsson, Flensburg took a clear lead for the first time to make it 6:3 (6th minute). From the middle of the first half, the guests had to do without Dani Baijens. The Dutchman saw the red card after an action against SG new signing Simon Pytlick. Hamburg didn’t let this tough decision throw them off and stuck with it. Mads Mensah Larsen gave the hosts a two-goal lead just seconds before the half-time whistle.

With three goals in a row, the SG made an optimal start to the second half and then even increased the lead to 21:15 (35th) and 23:16 (37th). Immediately afterwards, HSVH coach Torsten Jansen took the second time-out in the second period to put his team’s game back in order. The fact that Hamburg couldn’t come close was also due to Flensburg goalkeeper Kevin Möller. In the end, the Dane made 19 saves.

Hanover wins, Kiel and Löwen start later

In the second game of the first day, TSV Hannover-Burgdorf celebrated an away win at HC Erlangen. With eight goals in eight attempts, Marius Steinhauser was the best man at 27:25 (16:13) for the Hanoverians.

Champion THW Kiel, who defeated cup winner Rhein-Neckar Löwen in the Supercup on Wednesday evening (37:36 after a seven-meter throw), will play at newly promoted HBW Balingen-Weilstetten on Sunday (08/27/2023). The lions don’t get on until August 31st.
