For the first time in Golden Globes history, an acceptance speech was censored. Teyana Taylor used her award to make a powerful statement.

The 2026 Golden Globes were awarded on Sunday, January 11, 2026. One honoree made history: Teyana Taylor delivered the first acceptance speech ever to be censored. But what at least resonated with the audience and the broadcast: She thanked the Black community.

Award for Best Supporting Actress

At the Golden Globes ceremony, the actress secured the first prize of the evening. She won best supporting actress for her portrayal of resistance fighter Perfidia Beverly Hills in “One Battle After Another.” She caused a stir not only with her role, but also with her acceptance speech during the ceremony.

Visibly touched by the award, the 35-year-old probably unintentionally became the first winner in the history of the prize to have her speech censored. As she accepted the award, the audio of her speech was temporarily interrupted as she commented to the Golden Globe statue in her arms: “Oh my God, this s— is heavy.”

The censorship does not refer to the content of the speech, but to the swear word used. Traditionally, swearing in speeches during the ceremony is frowned upon. Since this is the first censorship in history, it appears to have been followed in recent years.

Emotional acceptance speech

The actress, who is also a singer and songwriter, was visibly emotional about the announcement of her win. She climbed the stage in tears and accepted the award. Apparently she didn’t expect to win the coveted statue. So she started her speech by saying, “Oh my God, I almost didn’t write a speech because I didn’t think I was going to get this.”

She then turned to her children: “Oh, my babies! My babies are upstairs watching, you better put your damn phones down and look at me right now.”

She also thanked God for “every lesson, every trial and every blessing” and her family. “One Battle After Another” creator Paul Thomas Anderson showered her with praise: “Paul ‘Let ‘Em Cook’ Thomas Anderson, thank you for your vision, your trust and your brilliance. My gratitude knows no bounds. I love you, we love you, and thank you for giving me and our entire ensemble this space.”

Before the speech was censored, she also addressed her co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and others: “None of this is taken lightly, and none of this is taken for granted.”

Your message

Concluding her speech, the honoree added another note, thanking the entire Black community: “And lastly, but most importantly, to my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight: Our softness is not weakness. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we enter. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space. Thank you, everyone. Thank you!”
