Biathlete Denise Herrmann was crowned Olympic champion in singles and gave the German team its second gold medal at the Winter Games in Beijing.

The 33-year-old from Oberwiesenthal only had one penalty minute in the classic over 15 km and was only the second German winter athlete to achieve the Olympic double with medals in two different sports. Herrmann won bronze in the cross-country relay in Sochi in 2014.

For Team D it is the third medal in China. Previously, luger Johannes Ludwig had won gold, while ski jumper Katharina Althaus won silver on the normal hill. Susi Erdmann (tobogganing, bobsleigh) was the first German Olympian to win a medal in two different winter sports.

Vanessa Voigt (Rotterode) just missed a medal on Monday. With one penalty, the 24-year-old was only 1.3 seconds behind third-placed Marte Olsbu Röiseland (Norway/2), silver went to Anais Chevalier-Bouchet (France/1).
