Giro d’Italia, 5th stage: toast in Salerno

In the 5th stage another Australian party after the success of Matthews in Melfi. But the finish is hell: at -7 Roglic and Vine and the pink jersey Leknessund fall among the others; Evenepoel goes down again at -2.7. Ranking unchanged

Kaden Groves wins the 5th stage of the Giro d’Italia with arrival in Salerno in the sprint. Jonathan Milan, who sprints in a rain jacket (a rather gross mistake) has to bow this time. Third place for Pedersen ahead of Dainese and Cavendish who crosses the line in flight. But perhaps this is the least of a day with a crazy ending with three sensational crashes that could also affect the final outcome of the race.

the first fall

At -7, on the last real curve of the day, they fall in front. On the ground, among others, finish the pink jersey Leknessund, Roglic (who restarts with Bouwman’s bike), Vine and Groves himself.

remco makes a mistake and gets angry

At -2.7 from the finish, therefore within the final 3 km, Remco makes a trivial mistake. He looks to the left and moves to the right to be removed. However, a Trek arrives from behind, the two touch each other and the world champion triggers a fall. He stays down for a while, but he’s not in a hurry anyway because in that situation-fallen-time is blocked. When he gets up he’s black, but he’s to blame.

cav in flight

Cavendish tries to sprint, but his bike skids on the paint of the stripes and loses a pedal stroke. After all, its classic position for sprints, very low and moved forward, “lightens” the rear. The fact is that he swerves to the right, the bike embarks and he loses control. Thus the finish line crosses him while he falls.

The dog and fear

Strange stage that had already experienced even a long icy shiver despite being near Irpino heat. In fact, at km 19, Remco Evenepoel tasted the asphalt due to a dog that crossed the group’s road.
