The choice to relax the corona measures is a political decision, but understandable. Support for the restrictions is declining, and the pressure from society to give sectors more space is increasing.
That is what Casper den Heijer of the GGD Zuid-Limburg said on Tuesday evening in the Limburg Central television program.

It is logical that the cabinet gradually relaxes and does not immediately release all measures, says the GGD doctor. “The number of infections is already high, which will increase further. The pressure in hospitals is therefore increasing, especially because more healthcare staff will be absent. It will be an exciting phase.”

At the moment, especially young people are infected. There is a slight increase among the elderly, but in this category far fewer people are infected than among the young. Den Heijer: “More elderly people have had a booster vaccination. You will probably see that booster effect again. In addition, because of their vulnerability, the elderly will adhere better to the rules.”
Celebrate Carnival responsibly
Many Limburg associations, companies and enthusiasts mainly focus on carnival. What is possible and what is not possible? Casper den Heijer: “Politics also takes a decision here. As a GGD doctor I fully understand the sentiment and especially want to appeal to carnivalists: celebrate responsibly.”

Den Heijer thinks that carnival will be less large-scale than usual. In addition, no 1G policy will be introduced at outdoor locations. A negative test should always be shown. “Keep in mind that the virus thrives when large groups of people are close to each other. So stay home if you have complaints and do a self-test. It is also important to pay attention to your hygiene during carnival.”
Despite the fact that the infections are falling, the coming weeks will be exciting. Den Heijer: “Not so much in the hospitals, but especially with the staffing. I am thinking especially of the care chain around the hospitals, such as general practitioners, nursing homes and home care.”
New omikron variant
A new variant of the omikron virus has now emerged. It seems more contagious and bypasses people’s immune system better. The clinical picture of this new variant is also less serious. “Nevertheless, we must continue to monitor the progress of this carefully. The intermediate step that the cabinet is now taking is therefore logical.”
