Germany’s national rugby team surprise against Australia

The German 7-a-side rugby national team caused a big surprise in the World Series.

The team of national coach Damian McGrath beat co-favorite Australia with a strong performance on Friday at the start in Malaga, Spain, by 12:12. In the second group game, the Wolfpack meets Ireland in the afternoon (4:50 p.m.).

Fabian Hempel equalized the lead of the Australians with a converted conversion. Tim Lichtenberg had previously made the second attempt for the selection of the German Rugby Union with the last attack of the game.

The third opponent of the German team is Japan on Saturday at 12:11 p.m. Only the top two teams qualify for the quarterfinals.

Germany was only selected as a replacement for New Zealand a few weeks ago. Due to the corona pandemic, the All Blacks are not taking part in the tournaments in Malaga and Seville, for which the German selection was invited again.

At the first two events in Dubai, the DRV team was uninvited at short notice despite a commitment.
