Germany U21 national team is happy about the 4:2 win against Italy

Di Salvo “enjoy this moment”

Shortly before the start of the World Cup of the German national soccer team, the U21s were happy about the successful conclusion of an exciting international game year. “First of all, I’m enjoying this moment that we’re getting into the winter break well – and then we’ll approach the tournament step by step,” said coach Antonio Di Salvo after a thrilling evening in rainy Ancona and a 4-2 win over Italy.

Cologne debutant Denis Huseinbasic (23rd minute), Lazar Samardzic (52nd) from Udinese Calcio, Freiburg’s Kevin Schade (56th) and Maurice Malone from Wolfsberger AC (88th penalty) scored the German goals in one, some of which were worth seeing fun friendly game.

After defeats against France (0:1) and England (1:3), success in the next prestigious duel was particularly important. “There was a great atmosphere in the dressing room, as if it had been a much more important game than a friendly game,” said Freiburg’s Yannik Keitel of the German Press Agency.

The 22-year-old was already looking forward to the World Cup games in Qatar and the appearances of the German team around his Freiburg teammates Christian Günter and Matthias Ginter or his U21 colleagues Armel Bella-Kotchap and Youssoufa Moukoko. “I think that’s a really great team that we’ve put together.”

The U21s also presented themselves as a great team, impressively surviving the mood dampeners against France and England as well as a brief shaky phase in the game against Italy after leading 3-0 and winning 3-2. “We wanted these crackers. I think you could see that they’re a bit further,” said Di Salvo, who wants to be in Qatar from the World Cup quarter-finals onwards.

The 43-year-old should pay particular attention to his two U21 players, Bella-Kotchap and Moukoko, who still want to be in the tournament. “I’m happy and I hope that both and other guys their age perform well. And we’ll see what happens next year,” said Di Salvo on “Sat.1”. “But from my point of view it is not forbidden to play a World Cup and next year a U21 European Championship. I think that’s just important for the development of these players.”

For his U21 team, things will continue in March with one home and one away game. Then the defending champion wants to get going for the European Championship finals from June 21 to July 8 in Georgia and Romania. After that, the successor to successful coach Stefan Kuntz has to address the difficult question of who will be part of the squad for the European Championship.
