German referee doubts return after death threats | Football

“I am now standing in front of a room with two doors. One door leads me back to the football field and the other leads me to a private life without this publicity, without this pressure, without this stress,” Zwayer said in an interview with Sky TV.

Zwayer received a lot of criticism from players, staff members and supporters of Dortmund for his performance in the duel with Bayern. Robert Lewandowski scored the winning goal in the 77th minute from a penalty kick, which Bayern got after a handball from Mats Hummels. Borussia coach Marco Rose reacted furiously to the referee’s decision and was sent off with a red card.

Midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined 40,000 euros for the statement: “You put a referee who has manipulated matches before in charge of the most important match in Germany. What do you expect then?” Bellingham was referring to Zwayer’s alleged involvement in a 2005 match-fixing case involving referee Robert Hoyzer. “I would like to exchange views with Jude Bellingham, in particular on this subject,” Zwayer said in the interview. “I am now charting the right path towards my choice.”

German referee boss Lutz Michael Fröhlich hopes Zwayer will make a comeback. “We would be happy if Felix Zwayer stays with us,” he says on the website of the German Football Association DFB.
