German ice hockey player loses his nerve – and strikes

It wasn’t supposed to be: The German ice hockey team had to prove themselves in the decider and clearly missed the quarter-finals. Shortly before, a DEB professional lost his nerve.

After a narrow 2:3 defeat against the USA, the German ice hockey team missed direct qualification for the quarterfinals. There was a 4-0 defeat in the decider against Slovakia on Tuesday, meaning the tournament is over for Toni Söderholm’s team. The dream of a medal has burst.

You could tell the frustration of the German team. One in particular lost his nerve: David Wolf. The German professional punched his opponent Libor Hudacek in the neck shortly before the end. This went down, the DEB player got a penalty (5 minutes) and a game misconduct penalty.

You can see his shot in the video above or here.

Early deficit for the DEB team

It started very bitterly for the German ice hockey team. In the eleventh minute, goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger conceded a goal through Libor Hudacek and Slovakia took a 1-0 lead (11:04). With this deficit, Toni Söderholm’s team went into the break after the first third.

It didn’t get any better in the middle third either. Slovakia was too strong offensively and doubled it. First Peter Cehlarik increased to 2:0. Then Michal Kristof made it 3-0 (28:45) for Slovakia in the 29th minute. The German team did not manage to assert themselves.

That stayed the same in the last third. The team conceded the 0:4 through Marek Hrivik (57:56). After that, tempers heat up again. And the German ice hockey team was eliminated.
