German handball players only with 13 players against Russia

Bratislava (dpa) – Contrary to what was originally announced, the German handball players will only play 13 players against Russia in their final European Championship game (6 p.m. / ZDF).

Backcourt player Hendrik Wagner, who the German Handball Federation (DHB) had already announced via Twitter in his squad for the game, will not be used after all. The second division professional of the Eulen Ludwigshafen made his tournament debut on Sunday against Sweden after a corona infection and several days of isolation, but complained of breathing problems after a few minutes of use.

According to the tournament rules, national coach Alfred Gislason could actually compete with 16 players. Due to a massive corona outbreak in the German team, the Icelander only has a core squad available at the end of the tournament. Except for Wagner, the other 14 national players who were infected with Corona at the tournament in Slovakia and Hungary have already left. The DHB selection no longer has a chance of reaching the semifinals.
