The 1958 season of the GDR league marked an important turning point in East German football. After years of the dominance of southern teams, the ASK Vorwärts Berlin (today 1. FC Frankfurt/Oder) secured the championship title. The club of the National People’s Army showed constant achievements over the entire season and secured the first championship title in the club’s history with 17 wins, four draws and five defeats.
The SC Motor Jena (Carl Zeiss Jena) followed in second place with six points less and with Helmut Müller provided the top scorer (17 goals). The master of 1956 and 1957, SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt (Erzgebirge Aue), took fourth place, but celebrated great success for this. After victories against Petrolul Ploiesti and IFK Gothenburg, the quarter -finals of the European Cup of the national champions were reached, in which one was just lost in the decision game Young Boys Bern. In the FDGB Cup, the SC unit Dresden (Dresdner SC) triumphed, which defeated defending champion SC Lokomotive Leipzig (former Saxony Leipzig) in the final defending champion SC Lokomotive.
The relegation battle in the upper house was exciting, whereby the SC Chemie Halle (Hallescher FC) only had to start the walk in League two due to the poorer goal difference compared to Turbine Erfurt (Rot-Weiß Erfurt) and progress Weißenfels (SSC Weißenfels). Oberliga founding member BSG Rotation Babelsberg (Fortuna Babelsberg) followed chemistry as the bottom of the table.
There were two surprises in the second-class 1st GDR league. As expected, Lok Stendal, as expected, made the immediate return, the SC Motor-Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitzer FC) was passed directly into the third division. Master also became none of the favorite teams from Magdeburg, Halle or the then Karl-Marx-Stadt, but the BSG Chemie Zeitz (1. FC Zeitz), who celebrated the promotion to the GDR league as a founding member of the 2nd league.
