From loser to Olympian: Amsterdam Lions proud that lacrosse is Olympic again

Lacrosse will be an Olympic sport in 2028. There are a number of international players at Amsterdam Lions and they naturally hope that they will be there. “I never expected this. When I started, I was a real loser and couldn’t do anything. Now that the opportunity is there, we all go for it,” said international Femke de Boer.

Lacrosse is often described as (ice) hockey through the air. It is true that for men it is a real physical sport, but for women there are different rules and it is more about tactics and speed. “We can make less physical contact,” De Boer explains.

The intention is that the rules for men and women will be equalized by 2028. The teams at the Olympic Games will also consist of six people. Lacrosse is a popular sport in America and Canada, while it is still unknown in Europe.

Qualify?

The qualification process for the Olympic Games is still precisely known. However, the spirit is present among the people of Amsterdam. “We certainly still have to work hard, but I think it can be done. We needed a kick in the ass and now we got it now that it’s the Olympics. We have to win.”

NH Sport spent the entire afternoon on Sunday with the first men’s and first women’s teams of Amsterdam Lions. That resulted in the above video report.
