Frank-Walter Steinmeier re-elected as Federal President

Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been re-elected as Federal President and thus has a second term ahead of him.

With a majority of 1045 votes, the Federal Assembly re-elected the 66-year-old to the highest state office on Sunday in Berlin.

The Federal Assembly had 1,472 participants. 1425 valid votes were cast, of which 86 abstained.

The left-wing social physician Gerhard Trabert received 96 votes. The economist Max Otte, nominated by the AfD, received 140 votes and the astrophysicist Stefanie Gebauer, nominated by the Free Voters, received 58 votes.

Steinmeier is the twelfth President in the history of the Federal Republic and the fifth to stand for re-election after the first five-year term. His first term of office does not formally end until March 18, and the new term begins the day after.

The Federal President is the highest constitutional body. At the same time, as a lesson learned from the failed Weimar Republic, the head of state has only limited direct powers. He examines and signs laws and above all has representative tasks.
