When do you jump?

It starts on New Year’s Day 2022 with the trial run at 12.20 p.m. The actual New Year’s jump (in the t-online live ticker) then starts at 2 p.m. with the first round. The final round of the best 30 jumpers will follow at 3 p.m.

How many spectators will there be?

None, unfortunately. Due to the corona rules in Bavaria, no fans are allowed. Normally there would have been over 25,000 spectators. The local “Garmisch-Partenkirchner Tagblatt” writes in this context of a “sad anniversary”, because the traditional New Year’s competition of the organizing SC Partenkirchen is taking place for the 100th time – but not always as part of the Four Hills Tournament, which is now being held for the 70th time . There is a ban mile around the Olympic ski stadium, the event area is cordoned off over a large area.

Where can you watch the New Year’s jump on TV?

The New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen runs at Eurosport, among others. The broadcaster will broadcast the entire Four Hills Tournament on TV and online via the Eurosport Player (for a fee). ARD and ZDF meanwhile share the broadcasting rights. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the ZDF is on the air and also broadcasts the jumping via the media library. Of course, you can also follow the event in the t-online live ticker.

What is the starting position?

The opening competition in Oberstdorf around 100 kilometers to the west was won by the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi (Japan). With him on the podium were the Norwegians Halvor Egner Granerud and Robert Johansson. Behind them are Marius Lindvik (also Norway) and the German tour favorite Karl Geier. Although the leading violinist in the World Cup did not live up to the high expectations in terms of placement, things are looking pretty good for him in the overall standings. Because: the tips are close together there. Geiger is fifth only about six points behind Kobayashi, which corresponds to about three meters on the hill. No wonder that the 28-year-old stays calm and says: “Everything is still possible.” The goal of becoming the first German jumper since Sven Hannawald to win the tour 20 years ago remains firmly in his sights. And Hannawald himself also believes in Geiger. However: The Olympic hill in Partenkirchen has often spoiled the tour for the DSV eagles. It’s hard to believe: Hannawald’s last victory so far in “GAP” was achieved in 2002.

What’s the mode like?

In the qualification the best 50 jumpers will be determined. In the New Year’s event, they then compete in direct duels in the first round – according to the mode: first against 50th, second against 49th, etc. The 25 winners of these duels automatically move into the 2nd round. In addition, there are five other jumps with the best points, the so-called “lucky losers”, so that a total of 30 jumpers are involved in the final round from 3 p.m.

Which German jumpers are there?

the Qualification on Friday won the German six-time world champion Markus Eisenbichler with a jump of 137 meters. Geiger finished third behind main competitor Kobayashi with 135.5 meters. Stephan Leyhe (Willingen) also made it to the finals in ninth, ex-world champion Severin Freund (Rastbüchl, 17th place), Constantin Schmid (Oberaudorf, 20th), Pius Paschke (Kiefersfelden, 29th), Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger (Ruhpolding , 47.), Justin Lisso (Schmiedefeld, 40.) and Felix Hoffmann (Goldlauter, 45.). Here is an overview of their duels in the first round:

Junshiro Kobayashi (50th / Japan) – Markus Eisenbichler (1st / Victory Village)
Roman Trofimow (48th / Russia) – Karl Geiger (3rd / Oberstdorf)
Andreas Wellinger (47th / Ruhpolding) – Jan Hörl (4th / Austria)
Felix Hoffmann (46th / Goldlauter) – Piotr Zyla (5th / Poland)
Peter Prevc (42./Slovenia) – Stephan Leyhe (9./Willingen)
Justin Lisso (40th / Schmiedefeld) – Daniel Andre Tande (11th / Norway)

Ulrich Wohlgenannt (31st / Austria) – Constantin Schmid (20th / Oberaudorf)
Pius Paschke (29./Kiefersfelden) – Lovro Kos (22./Slovenia)

How do the DSV stars celebrate New Year’s Eve?

As good as not at all. “I’ll go back to bed pretty quickly, which I do every year. I’m not there to party, but to exercise my passion,” said Eisenbichler on New Year’s Eve. Before dinner there might be a beer – “a kloans”, as the 30-year-old revealed in his typical Bavarian dialect. But then he wanted to retire “like every year” before midnight. His teammates do it similarly. For the DSV-Adler, sleeping instead of a New Year’s Eve party is on the program before the New Year’s jump.

And what kind of hill can jumpers expect?

The New Year’s jump traditionally takes place on the large Olympic hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is a landmark of the well-known tourist destination and was built for the Olympic Games in 1936. In 2007 it was then torn down and gave way to a new building with the most modern architecture, which has already won several international awards. The most important key data:

Total height: 149 meters
Inrun length 103.5 meters
Jump speed: 92 km / h

The calculation point at which the slope of the landing slope becomes flatter is 125 meters. The hill size (the distance between the edge of the take-off and the point on the landing slope where the run still has a slope of 32 degrees) is an indicator of the size of the jump and is 142 meters.
