Fortuna Düsseldorf meets Kownacki’s wish: loan to Lech Poznan

Fortuna Düsseldorf confirmed on Tuesday that record purchase Dawid Kownacki was released from training “because he is in talks with another club”. Almost exactly 24 hours later, the official confirmation from the second division team followed: The 24-year-old is moving to youth club Lech Poznan on loan until the end of the season.

“Dawid has not had an easy time lately, mainly due to injuries. His move to Poznan is a good opportunity to get back to his old strength in a familiar environment. We have also complied with Dawid’s wish and hope that the loan will be a success for all sides. Dawid still plays an important role in our planning,” said Fortuna Sports Director Klaus Allofs.

Kownacki was loaned to Dusseldorf from Sampdoria Genoa in January 2019 and was committed a year later for 6.75 million euros. In 67 games, the striker scored 12 goals and provided seven assists.

A move to Poznan had already been suggested in the previous week, but then seemed to be off the table again. After a basic agreement, Kownacki canceled Posen on Sunday because a late and better offer had been received from KV Mechelen, it said. On Monday’s deadline day, everyone involved assumed a move to Belgium. Phone calls from a handful of club officials and people from Lech Posen made Kownacki change his mind again – contrary to his adviser’s recommendation. In Poland, the transfer window is still open in February.
