A diplomat from among the leadership of the Japanese Embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, where he was protesting about the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the southern Kuril Islands in Tokyo in early December. About it reported official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.

The Japanese diplomat was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on December 17. He was reminded that they had already protested about the same event in 2020. This is the exhibition “Territory and Sovereignty”, which is supported by the Japanese authorities.

“The Japanese organizers again took this provocative step, once again not finding a place for placement among the exhibits for such documents as the 1945 Act of Surrender, according to which Japan pledged to“ honestly fulfill the terms of the Potsdam Declaration ”, the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty from Tokyo’s rejection of all claims to the Kuriles, as well as the UN Charter, which irrevocably consolidated our country’s sovereignty over the islands, ”Zakharova said.

In addition, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the joint military exercises of Japan and the United States on December 6 at Hokaido Island. “Their conduct in the immediate vicinity of the border of the Russian Federation, the scale and range of the operations being practiced force us to consider these maneuvers as a serious challenge and potential threat to the security of our country in the Far East,” Zakharova noted.
