VfL Osnabrück has achieved a breakthrough in the 2nd Bundesliga: The promoted team deservedly beat HSV 2-1 (2-1) on Friday evening and celebrated their first win of the season. For Hamburg it was the second defeat against a promoted team in a row after the 1:2 in Elversberg.
The Bremen Bridge once again lived up to its very special reputation: flooded, sold out – the perfect conditions for the underdog. Especially when it comes to Hamburger SV, who lost a competitive game in Osnabrück for the fifth time in a row and is in the first crisis of the young season after a very weak performance.
The newcomer, however, gave an impressive answer to the 7-0 defeat in Hanover on the last matchday. The Lower Saxony were present and had the first good chance when Moritz Heyer had to clear in desperate need and almost scored an own goal (5th).
Glatzel with a great goal – Engelhardt too
Nevertheless, Hamburg took the lead because VfL lost the ball with serious consequences and goal scorer Robert Glatzel showed his class. Set up by László Bénes, he calmly let Oumar Diakhite get out and scored to make it 1-0 – a great goal (12th).
And another effective goal for the ailing VfL, which Erik Engelhardt countered directly – and just as impressively as Glatzel before: The HSV defense was poorly staggered and allowed the center forward to get the ball in the six-yard box. He turned around Guilherme Ramos and hit the ball into the goal from a tight angle (16.)
HSV defense off track
Osnabrück realized that Hamburg were vulnerable defensively without the injured captain Sebastian Schonlau that evening and continued to press. The poorly positioned HSV defense, in which the erratic Ramos in particular was a constant source of trouble for his teammates, was remarkably easy to outwit several times. So Diakhite’s opening goal was no longer a surprise (39′).
VfL even had to be a little annoyed that they “only” went into the break with a 2-1 lead and didn’t take advantage of any of their further chances.
Osnabrück remains the better team
Things couldn’t really go on like this for the Hamburg team. Incomprehensibly, things got even worse with the restart. The team completely lost order, simply lost the ball and thus invited the promoted team to counterattack every minute. However, VfL didn’t always play this well – or failed due to the strong HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes.
The Hamburg team recovered a bit from the 70th minute onwards. At first it wasn’t really dangerous for Lower Saxony. It looked completely different on the other side: Bashkim Ajdini broke into the penalty area and narrowly missed the target (72′).
So there remained hope for Tim Walter’s team to at least take one more point from the bottom of the table and prevent the very worst. But nothing came of it – and it wouldn’t have been deserved.
It is significant for the course of the game that Noel Niemann missed the huge chance to make it 3-1 and failed due to Heuer Fernandes (90th + 2).
