Football players Ajax dethrone PSV as cup winner

The football players of Ajax have won the KNVB Cup. In the final in De Goffert in Nijmegen, the team of coach Danny Schenkel defeated PSV 2-1. The Eindhoven women were therefore unable to follow the men’s example. PSV won 2-1 against Ajax in Rotterdam on Sunday.

In the women’s final, Ajax took the lead shortly before half-time. Romée Leuchter received the ball on the edge of the box in the 39th minute and she managed to keep her opponent away. Leuchter tapped the ball wide on the incoming Nadine Noordam, who scored in the corner in a controlled manner: 1-0. Noordam played for ADO Den Haag last season. With ADO she lost 1-0 to PSV in the cup final.

The second half in Nijmegen was more spectacular than the first, with chances for both goals. After a mistake by defender Jonna van de Velde, who simply let herself be trumped by the sideline, Amalie Thestrup was able to score the equalizer at the near post in the 74th minute.

PSV could only briefly enjoy that tie. After a nice pass by Victoria Pelova, Leuchter headed the ball through the ground into the goal in the 76th minute.

Leuchter, former player of PSV, had an important share in Ajax’s cup win with the goal and the assist. The Amsterdam club previously won the women’s cup in 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. PSV remains on the cup win of 2021.
