Finland’s most hated discussion forum behind a paywall – This is how social media got heated

Ylilauda’s free chat content was significantly limited. For a monthly fee of almost seven euros, users can also see older discussion threads.

Ylilauta is especially popular with many young people. According to the site, it averages 2.5 million page loads per day. Jenni Gästgivar

Iltalehti reported on Thursday that Ylilauda, a popular discussion forum among young people, has become largely paid. Many in social media believe that an anonymous forum that wants money will not be profitable in the future.

– Good luck! The payers can probably be counted in dozens, if not that many. They would have been satisfied with the little advertising income, Telegram takes away readers, one commented in X (formerly Twitter).

– It’s weird that many of these online services imagine themselves to be so important that users would be willing to pay something for them, another commented on Reddit.

The users of the discussion platform have mostly been enraged by the reform. Many users complain that the discussion forum has been in decline for many years.

– Has anyone bought that Ylilauta? The development is going in a bad direction if it is also wanted to be silenced, even if it contains a lot of inappropriate content, says a person who commented on the Kaksplus discussion board.

One dies, another takes over?

In the new reform, most of the discussion threads are locked behind a gold account, which costs 6.90 euros per month or 69 euros per year. With the new policies, old discussion threads are visible only to paid users. The expiration date is at most 24 hours.

Because of the reform, some people think that Ylilauta users will start to flow to other platforms.

– When one board dies, another takes its place, one continues on Reddit.

– I hope the people messing around on the board find a new home and don’t get channeled here, says one Reddit chatter.

There are also people for whom the news is positive.

– This is the greatest victory for humanity if we get rid of it! one user gloated on Reddit.

– And nothing valuable was lost, says another on Reddit.

The discussion platform was founded in 2011 Aleksi Kinnusen i.e. nickname by Sopsy.

– I follow orders to raise immediate income by any means, and I don’t have enough say in the company to fight back, Sopsy wrote on the forum about the reform.

Behind Ylilauda is a company called Lauta Media, which is registered in Malta. According to company information, a holding company registered in an unknown country has recently bought more shares from it.

Overboard

Ylilauta is a platform where you can discuss anonymously. According to Ylilauta, it has an average of about 2.5 million page downloads per day and 100,000–110,000 active users per day. The site receives tens of thousands of messages every day.

There is a lot of discussion on the site. According to the Ministry of Justice, Ylilauta is Finland’s most significant platform for publishing hate speech. There are 96 percent of all hate speech messages in Finland.

Discussions contain a lot of over-the-top trolling and inappropriate content. For example, there are racist and chauvinistic comments in several threads.
