Five athletes were selected for the Finnish World Cup team on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the Finnish Sports Confederation SUL named the first athletes for the World Championships in Athletics in Budapest.
Five athletes got a place in the competition. Marathoners are going to Budapest Alisa Vainioaturi Viivi Lehikoinena pole vaulter Wilma Murtoa triple jumper Kristiina Mäkelä and race walker Aleksi Ojala.
Last summer, Murto won the European Championship in Munich and recently celebrated the indoor EC gold. Mäkelä took the EC bronze last summer.
– According to SUL’s selection system, everyone has reached the direct result limit required for the games in the given time window and has shown their competitiveness and fitness in this year’s competitions, SUL’s General Manager Jani Tanskanen comment on the selections in the bulletin.

Also European Championship bronze medalist in javelin Lassi Etelätalo has broken the WC result limit in the required time window. Athlete selections for the men’s javelin throw have not been made, however, because there are more eligible athletes than countries.
– According to the selection system, in sports where there may be more eligible athletes than there are country-specific athlete spots, the greatest weight is placed on the estimated prospect of success and the results of 2023, Tanskanen says.
The World Championships in Budapest will take place from the 19th to the 27th. August. The next selection day for athletes is at the beginning of June.
According to Tanskanen, the choices are focused on July-August.

At the same time, SUL announced the selections for the EC team competitions in race walking. The races will be held in Podebrady, Czech Republic, on May 21.
Among the general category athletes, Aleksi Ojala, Aku Bearden and Enni Nurmi. Everyone competes in 20 kilometers.
The team will be completed on April 26.
