Bayern talent Felipe Chávez made his debut for the Peru national team in the 1-2 defeat in the friendly against Chile. “Pippo’s nomination to the senior national team comes as a surprise at first glance, as he has only played competitive games for us in the Regionalliga and the Youth League. He was convincing for the most part in both competitions,” said Bayern’s director of campus and youth development Jochen Sauer to the “Kicker”.
In the 78th minute, Chávez came on as a substitute for Jairo Concha and wore the Peru jersey for the first time. Since it was only a test match, it does not count towards the criteria for a firm decision in favor of the association and he could also play for Germany. The 18-year-old was born in Aichach near Augsburg in Bavaria and has both German and Peruvian citizenship because his father comes from Peru. Peru finished ninth in the World Cup qualification in South America and therefore missed the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
Chávez, who already played for Peru’s U17 and U20 teams, moved from FC Augsburg’s youth team to FC Bayern in 2019. This season, the central midfielder plays for Munich’s second team and was involved in three goals in eight games in the regional league. He also scored two goals for the U19s in the Youth League. He was still denied a chance with the professionals.
“He now has to stick with it and continue to work hard on himself, especially in the physical area, then he will certainly be one of the next candidates who will assert himself in a professional league,” explained Sauer. During the preparation, Chávez made a lasting impression on the first team. However, due to the great competition in the central midfield, it could take a while for him to play for the professionals.
