Premiere also for Sildillia & Millot
In his second nomination as coach of the French U21 national team, Thierry Henry helped a Bundesliga trio make their debut. The 46-year-old called Mathys Tel from FC Bayern Munich, Freiburg’s Kiliann Sildillia and Stuttgart professional Enzo Millot into the squad for the European Championship qualifying games against Bosnia-Herzegovina (October 13) and Cyprus (October 17). The former also received praise from Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps.
“He is very efficient in the assignments he gets. He can be decisive every moment he comes into play. I hope that he will get as much playing time as possible (with the U21; editor),” said Deschamps in a media round on Thursday. “We are watching him closely, but there are still some development steps he can go through.”
Tel has six goals and one assist in 293 minutes for Bayern this season, including in narrow wins away from home against FC Copenhagen (2-1) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-1) and in the Allianz Arena against Manchester United (4:3). Only the great competition in Munich’s offensive stands in the way of more playing minutes for the 18-year-old.
With the jersey of the French national team, Tel has appeared on the field nine times for the U17, U18 and U19, and will make his debut with the U21 in October. “It’s extraordinary what he does off the bench in such a short space of time. It’s not easy to start playing at Bayern and it’s also not easy to come on as a substitute in front of players like Thomas Müller. “Mathys often comes in before him and makes the difference in these minutes,” praised Henry, who even called two 17-year-olds into the squad: Warren Zaïre-Emery from Paris Saint-Germain and Leny Yoro from LOSC Lille.
