It is not clear whether it concerns classified information about American nuclear weapons, but according to the American newspaper, the search emphasizes ‘the great fear that the documents will end up in the wrong hands’.

The search by dozens of FBI agents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach was approved by Attorney General Merrick Garland. He confirmed on Thursday that the raid was part of an investigation into whether Trump had taken documents from the White House that he was not allowed to take.

The anonymous sources that The Washington Post report that these are documents with information about nuclear weapons, do not want to give any further details. For example, it is not clear whether such documents were found during the search. Spokespersons for both the Justice Department and the FBI declined to comment. A Trump spokesperson also declined to comment.

The raid on Trump’s home sparked a stir this week. Attorneys and Trump supporters called the raid disproportionate compared to other cases in which White House officials illegally took official documents or knew e-mails.

Because the FBI has not yet released an official statement about the search, much is still unclear about the raid. The US Department of Justice has filed a request for the search warrant to be made public “in the public interest.” A judge can decide this. Trump can object.
