Review: Panda Bear & Sonic Boom :: Reset

Wouldn’t have dreamed it some time ago: Noah Lennox aka Panda Bear (Animal Collective) and Peter Kember aka Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3) are recording an album together. RESET begins – almost confirming the title – with a new start, which in turn refers to the hits from the beginning; are Eddie Cochran’s grandchildren re-recording the “Summertime Blues” here? Soon Panda Bear adds this Animal Collective-known singsong in memorian Beach Boys – at the end electronics, clapping beat, a bright hammering. Lennox and Kember strike an impressive balance throughout the album when it comes to bringing the noisy bits and the subtle melodies, the tender hymns, onto one platter.

The reverberation room of this musical two-man dream clatters with feathery hoohoohus and pretty smashing keyboard passages, RESET conquers a top spot among the airy summer music of the year 2022. And “Edge Of The Edge” is, we now dare to venture far beyond that Window, the song Brian Wilson forgot to write during the Beach Boys’ surfing years.
