The Olympic Games in Tokyo cost almost ten billion euros and were therefore significantly more expensive than originally planned.
The organizing committee put the costs in its final balance at 9.92 billion euros*. When it applied to host the event in 2013, the Japanese capital planned to spend around six billion euros.
The games originally planned for 2020 had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic and were therefore only played in 2021. Spectators were almost completely excluded.
*Correction: In a first version, we gave the figure as 12.4 billion euros. Please excuse the mistake.
