Former national ski jumping coach Werner Schuster is confident that the German jumpers will be able to finish the long series without an overall victory in the Four Hills Tournament.

“The awareness is there, the hunger is there, the work is done well and we are not far from it,” said the 52-year-old in a media panel organized by “Eurosport”. “I wish it for this generation and I think the chances are pretty good this year in particular,” said Schuster, who works as a TV expert for the station.

Since Sven Hannawald 20 years ago no German ski jumper has won the prestigious event around the turn of the year. Schuster compared the situation with that of Liverpool FC, who had to wait three decades for the title with coach Jürgen Klopp before winning the 2020 English championship. “Sometimes there are constellations that you just have to accept,” he said.

He gives the overall World Cup leader Karl Geiger from Oberstdorf and the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi the best chance of winning this winter. “It looks very much like a Geiger / Kobayashi duel,” said Schuster. The Austrian had looked after the German team from 2008 to 2019.
