European Parliament President Sassoli in hospital with “serious complications” | Abroad

The President of the European Parliament, the Italian David Sassoli, has canceled all his official activities. The 65-year-old Social Democrat has been hospitalized in his home country since December 26 with “serious complications resulting from a dysfunction of the immune system”. The press service of the parliament announced this on Monday.

Sassoli was already hospitalized in September last year. At the time, he was battling pneumonia, which was caused by Legionnaires’ disease. After two months, Sassoli made his comeback in parliament, but he made a far from fresh impression. Immediately the rumor mill in parliament started running at full speed.

The new hospitalization means a minor end for Sassoli’s presidency. Next week, the European Parliament’s plenary will elect a new president, but the Italian is not a candidate to succeed himself. Without incident he is succeeded by the Maltese Roberta Metsola.
