Energie Cottbus played the climb on the last matchday of the third division season. Instead of on relegation place three, the Lausitzer only finished fourth. A heavy blow.

For a long time it looked like Energie Cottbus was reaching the promotion relegation of the 3rd league. However, the team of coach Pele Wollitz lost his home game against FC Ingolstadt with 1: 4 and was overtaken by 1. FC Saarbrücken, who defeated Borussia Dortmund’s U23 in parallel.

A difficult blow for FC Energie, which could have made the march from the regional league to the 2nd Bundesliga. Striker Timmy Thiele subsequently said in tears in magenta: “It was an incredible ride. It hurts incredibly. I’m an old man, but that never stops.”

Thiele also misses a reunion with his ex-club Hertha BSC. “It hurts so much because it was already extremely desired,” added the 33-year-old, who had been celebrated by the supporters with his teammates. “The fans gave everything for us. The only thing I can say: we will come back and will attack together again next season and then hopefully create the big picture.”

Coach Wollitz spoke of “much empty” and “maximum disappointment”. “We were the clearly better team until 2-1,” he said. “We had huge situations.” For Cottbus, it is time for another year 3rd league.
