EM | DHB boss Andreas Michelmann dampens expectations

Shortly before the start of the European Championship, the bosses of the German Handball Federation are trying to keep the national team low.

The placement at the tournament in Slovakia and Hungary (January 13th to 30th) was “not so important in this case,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann in a “Deutschlandfunk” interview. “It is important that the team adjusts to each other after the upheaval, to get used to it.” The 62-year-old added the expectation to survive the preliminary round. “And then let’s see how far we can get.”

The DHB selection starts with nine debutants at the EM. In the preliminary round, the team of national coach Alfred Gislason meets Belarus, Austria and Poland.

The first two teams in the group advance to the main round. “We are far from overloading this team with any targets or putting additional pressure on them,” said Michelmann. The first yardstick for the newly formed team is the home EM 2024.
