Eliud Kipchoge wins Tokyo marathon in lightning-fast time | Other sports

Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge has won the Tokyo Marathon in the fourth fastest time ever. Kipchoge, 37, stayed in the Japanese capital with 2.02.40, just over a minute above his own world record (2.01.39).

In the women’s race, the world record holder Brigid Kosgei also triumphed. The 28-year-old Kenyan won in 2.16.02, almost 2 minutes above her world record (2.14.04).

Kipchoge first competed in the Tokyo Marathon. Last year, the Kenyan extended his Olympic title at the Tokyo Games in the 42.195 kilometer classic, but it was then run in Sapporo.

The Tokyo Marathon is one of the six majors. Kipchoge has now won four of them: London four times, Berlin three times, and Chicago and Tokyo once. The Boston and New York marathons are still missing from the Kenyan’s honors list, who now has three of the four best times ever run in the marathon. Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele is in second place in the all-time ranking with 2.01.41.
