Eastern Ukraine separatists lift moratorium on death penalty | Abroad

Last month, the separatists sentenced to death three more foreigners who fought as mercenaries with the Ukrainian army. It concerns two British and a Moroccan. The trio are currently awaiting a decision in the appeals process. According to the separatists, the sentences will be handed down this month. If the decision at first instance is not quashed or the defendants are not exchanged, they risk execution.

According to media reports, the separatists also have other foreigners in their hands. Two American prisoners were also shown on Russian television.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov did not rule out the possibility of the foreigners being shot. Russia will not interfere with the jurisdiction of the ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’, which Moscow recognizes as independent, it said.
