In the north of the province of Groningen, at 00.22 o’clock in the night from Wednesday to Thursday, an earthquake with a force of 2.2 reports, reports the KNMI. The quake took place three kilometers deep and the epicenter was near the Place Usquert, about 20 kilometers north of the city of Groningen.
Photojournalist Anjo de Haan speaks on X From “a fierce dull thump” and writes that he has felt the quake so “that you woke up”. Other residents of the area also write to have woken up on social media from the quake.
According to the KNMI, there was an “induced earthquake”, an earthquake caused by human action. Gas extraction in Groningen regularly takes place in the area since 1986.
A falling trend has been put in recent years, but the fact that the gas tap has been turned up does not mean that there are no more earthquakes.
Last year’s heaviest earthquake also had a magnitude of 2.2 and took place on 31 October near Garsthuizen in Groningen.
