The dog that was tied to a tree on Friday night in Tilburg, slowly relaxes in the shelter. The Pyrenean mountain dog was found at the yard, at the channel, and reacted very aggressively when the emergency services arrived. “The animal is not yet calm, but safe,” said an asylum employee on Monday.

“The dog was brought in by the police,” she continues. “He is very stressed by what was done to him so we leave him alone for four days to recover.” Then the shelter hopes that the dog, which is not injured, is again approachable.

In order to be able to transport the animal in the police bus, employees of the animal ambulance had to numb him. “So he needs some time to recover,” the employee explains further. “Of course we give him food, but we just let him alone.”

Until Tuesday, the dog of sixty kilos is still alone in an outdoor loft, then employees will see if the Pyrenean mountain dog is approachable and they do training and tests with him. Only when the animal has completely relaxed and is completely itself again, does the owner get two weeks to pick it up. “If that does not happen, he is from the shelter and another owner may take the dog with him,” the employee explains.

The police said that the owner did not report to the police. The dumping of pets is seen as heavy animal abuse and can be put on a big fine and even a prison sentence (see box).

Penalty

The maximum prison sentence for mistreatment or neglecting an animal is three years. You can also get a fine of up to 19,500 euros.

The judge can also determine that an owner is no longer allowed to keep animals.

A man found the animal on Saturday morning and warned the emergency services. The dog was very scared and reacted aggressively to passers -by and agents who wanted to help him.

The agents tried to build some confidence with the animal by stroking him occasionally, but his behavior always changed. Probably because he sees bad.

After hours of waiting, the animal ambulance came to help the big, frightened dog. The animal got a sleeping aid and then the dog managed to get to the police bus. An employee of the animal ambulance was bitten in his hand at that job.
